Piles is a power trio from Dorchester, MA that play that itchy, jerky, mathy style ala Shellac, Unwound and Oxes with a touch of the early 90's Seattle sound. The majority of their parts are instrumental; the splay complicated time signatures with a depth of harmonic textures. The musicianship is outstanding, and the recording suffices, but I would really like to see what Piles could do in a more advanced studio setting. The packaging of this promo CD is rad, it comes in a metal box, so they get points for DIY packaging. My personal favorite song of the three is "Do (Mia Favour)", which benefits from a sparse vocal line and driving dynamic swings. All in all, Piles is one of Boston's most exciting bands, but their best work seems in front of them. Reviewed by: Chris Bock |
